Say hello to the all new 2024 Mazda CX-90. Mazda has many different models of cars available, including the Mazda CX-9, which is soon to be discontinued. The CX-90 is meant to take the place of the CX-9, but do not be mistaken, this is not just a touch up and a new name Mazda is selling. The CX-90 is a different car that buyers will find themselves pleasantly pleased with.
To start, there is a plug-in-hybrid model and a non plug-in-hybrid model. The CX-90 is the first Mazda to use a new turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine that is augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system. Mazda claims that you will have 280 horsepower in non-S trims and 340 in S trims. The hybrid model has a 2.5-liter engine that has 189 hp. The electric motor has 173 hp, combined making 323 hp. 323 hp is enough to take the Mazda from 0 to 62 mph in 6.2 seconds. The plug-in-hybrid model’s power train is the second most powerful, right behind the CX-90 Turbo S engine. The CX-90 PHEV (Plug in hybrid electric vehicle), the car will default to EV mode, making it feel like an electric vehicle from the start. The EPA has said that the CX-90 has a fuel mileage for up to 24 mpg city driving and 28 mpg on the highway.
The CX-90 seats either 8 or 7 depending on the setup. The 7 seater car has two captain’s chairs in the second row. With the S premium Plus trim there is a center console in between the two chairs. The chairs also slide and recline. Second row passengers can control their own temperature, have their own air vents, USB ports, and in the bottom of the console is a slide-out storage bin. The center console hosts deep storage spaces and can also serve as an armrest to the two chairs. Still in the captain’s chair set up, access to the third row is granted by using a lever that moves the captain’s chairs out of the way. Third row passengers get USB-C ports to charge electronic devices as well as their own vents. Although manually operated, the third seats are extremely easy to put up and down. With the third row folders over, there is 40-cubic feet of cargo area, also leaving the load floor completely flat. Underneath the trunk, there is a storage area that is hidden to hide valuables and small items.
CarPro reviewed the driving ability of the CX-90 and said “ The ride is smooth, acceleration is terrific, it is super quiet inside, and there is absolutely no body lean thanks to Kinematic Posture Control. Steering feedback is poised and responsive. There is artificial engine sound pumped inside the vehicle, but it is not obtrusive and actually sounds great, and it will tow 5,000 pounds.” The quiet cabin is a bonus feature that makes the CX-90 that much more enticing to buy”.
For the exterior on the S Premium Plus trim there is the signature Mazda grill and air vents to feed the engine. On the sides there is a silver strip of chrome that runs along the bottom of the vehicle as well as outlines the windows. A first for Mazda are the 21-inch alloy wheels.
The interior is stunning with the two-tone layout. Alcantara runs across the dash and is on the soft-touch door panels. The front seats have heating and cooling technologies as well as memory settings. The seats are comfortable with power lumbar support and are created with a mix of leather and Alcantara. In the S Premium Plus trim there is a 12.3-inch gauge cluster. It’s simple to use and easy to read. There is a driving display that shows your current speed, next navigational directions, and other key features on the windshield so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. On the dashboard in the center is another 12.3-inch feature but this one is an infotainment screen. This screen is not a touchscreen unless you are using Apple CarPlay. There is a round knob in the center console that helps you operate the navigation system, AM/FM/HD radio, and Mazda Connected Services. Standard infotainment features are a 10.25-inch display, wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, eight-speaker stereo, HD radio, Bluetooth, 4 USB ports, and voice recognition.
The center console of the front seats is covered in wood and offers a wireless phone charger, USB ports, 2 cup holders, hill descent control, electronic emergency brake, and the auto hold button. The auto hold button when pressed keeps your vehicle at a complete stop without having to put it in park. When you step on the accelerator it will automatically turn off and your car will move. Hill descent control adjusts braking pressure to help control slippage and maintain a constant preset speed while you are going down a steep grade. There is also a power liftgate. Power liftgate is a feature that provides a motorized hatch to open and close electronically. You can activate the power liftgate from the key fob or a button on the gate.
