Introduction

The CX-30 debuted in 2019 as Mazda's latest offering in the subcompact crossover SUV segment. With the optional turbo engine producing up to 250 hp it is also one of the most powerful vehicles in the segment. It is currently one of Mazda's best-selling vehicles and with its mix of style, performance and pricing we can see why. Visit us at Tustin Mazda to see one for yourself.

Performance

Powertrain

Mazda offers two different engines for the CX-30 CUV. The first is a 2.5 L inline 4 cylinder producing 191 hp, up from the 2022 model. The second is a more aggressive 2.5 L inline 4 cylinder turbo producing 250 hp. Both engines come with a 6 speed automatic transmission and All Wheel Drive (AWD) so you can pick the right amount of power for your driving style.

Drive

Mazda prides itself on the drivability of its whole line of vehicles. The CX-30 is no different. It is built on the Mazda 3 platform and offers stability, power (especially with the turbo engine) and tight steering that will make you feel comfortable in all driving situations. It also offers sport mode, activated with a button next to the shifter, for an even more aggressive driving experience. With a taller body and suspension that is a little softer you'll find some differences with the Mazda 3, but overall it is a fun car to drive no matter where you're headed.

Safety

Safety

The 2024 Mazda CX-30 received a 5 star safety rating from NHTSA and includes the i-Activsense suite of safety features. The i-Activsense system offers a host of innovative driver assistance and safety technologies to help avoid collisions, enhance driver awareness and minimize the severity of an impact. Not all safety features are standard with all trims, so talk to your sales representative at Tustin Mazda if you have questions.

These include:
- Mazda Radar Cruise Control maintains a set speed and minimum following distance from the traffic ahead.
- Blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert to notify the driver of traffic coming from the sides.
- Smart Brake Support
- Six total airbags including dual frontal airbags, side chest-protecting and side head-protecting airbags (curtains), and driver and front passenger knee airbags
- Anti-lock brake system with brake assist
- Lane Departure Warning System

Exterior Design

The CX-30 features the smooth lines of the Kodo design language. The flowing body panels and a sleek front are accentuated by dark cladding along the bottom of the front and sides to give this subcompact a more confident presence. The Kodo design even extends to the LED head and tail lights and chrome accents along the body.

Interior Design

Crafted Interior

The interior of the CX-30 is stylish and well appointed. Mazda used soft touch materials with leather or faux leather accents and stitching along the doors and dashboard to give this vehicle a luxury feel. The drivercentric cockpit offers the not only comfort, but easy access to controls for the entire vehicle. The seats are comfortable and the whole experience is cozy for passengers.

Technology

The Mazda CX-30 features an analog driver gauge cluster and an 8.8” central infotainment screen. Mazda does not use a touchscreen, instead the screen is controlled by a rotary dial located in the center console next to the driver's thigh. Avoiding a touchscreen allowed Mazda to fully integrate the infotainment unit into the dash, which is pushed away from the driver and passenger to give them more space and also incorporates the screen better into the driver's field of view. It has a straightforward layout and simple controls to ensure it is easy to use while on the road. They also included a heads up display that projects the current speed onto the windshield. Android Auto and Apple Carplay come standard and the cockpit includes a USB port in the central storage compartment and in the center stack. It also offers a 360 degree exterior vehicle view alongside the backup camera.

Seating

The Mazda CX-30 seats 5, but the second row is cramped for three adults. The seats are well cushioned in both the front and back making for a comfortable ride for all passengers. The driver and front passenger seats are leather and feature 3 level heating in most trims. This compact crossover also offers rear vents to keep your passengers comfortable.

Cargo

The rear of the CX-30 offers 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row seats. If you need more room or need to transport something longer the 60/40 rear seats fold down to create 46 cubic feet of total space. If you still need more storage a properly equipped CX-30 can tow up to 1,500 lbs.

Summary

Customers are first looking at the Mazda3 Sedan and then buying the CX-30. With more ground clearance, more head room and the same solid driving performance it’s not hard to see why. If you need more space a CX-5 might be a better fit for you, but if you're looking for a subcompact SUV at a reasonable price you'll have a hard time finding a better value than the CX-30.
